DESCRIPTION
This position is a non-represented, non-sworn Police Recruit, employed with benefits while attending Basic Police Academy ( March-July 2026) . An Employed Police Recruit must successfully complete the MCOLES Basic Police Academy to be eligible for activation to a Police Officer position in the Troy Police Department. The Recruit will be sponsored for their academy training; the City of Troy will pay for all required tuition, course fees, equipment, and uniforms associated with Police Academy training. Regular attendance to classes is required.
REQUIREMENTS - All requirements must be attained by the closing date of the announcement unless otherwise stated below. Those who meet these criteria will be invited to an oral interview. Virtual (Zoom) interviews may be available upon request for special circumstances.
1. At least 21 years of age as of date of MCOLES activation.
2. Must be a United States citizen.
3. Vision correctable to 20/20 with no major defects; normal color vision; normal hearing.
4. Able to pass any physical agility test required for the Police Academy.
5. Must possess 12th grade reading and writing proficiency as measured on the College English Placement Test or an exam similar in content.
6. Education:
a. Associates Degree or a Bachelors Degree in any field, a minimum of 60 credit hours or 90 semester hours from an accredited college or university, or will complete an Associates degree or 60 credit hours upon completion of MCOLES Basic Police Academy.
b. Recent U.S military active duty experience (within five years prior to closing date of announcement; separation in good standing) may be substituted for years of college on a year-to-year basis.
c. Experience in private security, campus security, and/or reserves will not be considered.
7. No felony convictions.
8. Valid Michigan Driver License with good driving record (based on City of Troy standards). Out-of-state applicants must provide current driving record at time of application and obtain State of Michigan license within one (1) month of employment.
9. Passing results of the MCOLES Pre-employment Tests (reading, writing and physical ability tests).
10. Empco Testing:
a. Must have a current passing test score (at least 70%) at the closing date of this announcement. You must select “City of Troy” for the City to receive your results. Tests expired before the closing date will not be considered. Register with Empco at Test fees are the responsibility of the applicant.
ACTIVATION TO POLICE OFFICER
An Employed Police Recruit will be activated to a City of Troy sworn Police Officer upon
1. Successful completion of MCOLES Basic Police Academy, and
2. Passing the MCOLES licensing exam upon completion of Basic Police Academy.
Once activated, Police Officers will receive
1. Starting salary per 2023-2026 Troy Police Officers Association Collective Bargaining Agreement (currently: $78,224/yr.)
Employment with the City of Troy as an Employed Police Recruit is at-will and either party can terminate the employment relationship at any time with or without cause and with or without notice. If you do not successfully complete the MCOLES Basic Police Academy, you may be required to repay the City for the costs associated with your Police Academy training.
