BASIC FUNCTION:

The Senior Biostatistician will serve as a cornerstone of the Center for Innovation within the College of Medicine, leading the design, execution, and interpretation of complex statistical analyses that advance biomedical, clinical, and translational research. This on-campus position requires independent research expertise, advanced statistical modeling, and the ability to translate data into impactful insights that inform innovation initiatives, grant applications, peer-reviewed publications, and policy recommendations. The Senior Biostatistician will collaborate across the College of Medicine, providing high-level consultation to faculty, research teams, and leadership, while strengthening the Center's role as a hub for data-driven discovery and innovation.

SUPERVISORY ACCOUNTABILITY:

May supervise data analysts, statistical programmers, graduate research assistants, and other technical staff. Provides mentorship and training to faculty, staff, and students on biostatistical methods and tools.

NATURE AND SCOPE:

Internal contacts include senior administrators, faculty, research investigators, residents, fellows, students, and staff across the College of Medicine. External contacts include funding agencies, research collaborators, consultants, and peer institutions. The role requires frequent collaboration with multidisciplinary research teams and external partners to ensure statistical rigor and compliance with regulatory standards.

PRINCIPAL ACCOUNTABITIES:
  • Serve as lead biostatistical consultant for research studies, clinical trials, and translational science projects.
  • Develop and implement advanced statistical models including, but not limited to, longitudinal analysis, mixed-effects modeling, survival analysis, Bayesian approaches, predictive modeling, and artificial intelligence / machine learning applications.
  • Design and review study protocols, statistical analysis plans, and data management strategies for federally funded, foundation-supported, and industry-sponsored research.
  • Provide high-level input on grant proposals and manuscripts to ensure statistical validity and competitive positioning.
  • Lead and mentor staff and trainees in best practices for data coding, management, and analysis.
  • Oversee and implement quality control procedures for datasets, statistical outputs, and reports.
  • Develop new statistical methods or adapt existing techniques to emerging biomedical research questions.
  • Collaborate with interdisciplinary teams to translate findings into clinical practice, innovation projects, and population health strategies.
  • Contribute to strategic initiatives that enhance data infrastructure, analytics capabilities, and innovation pipelines at the Center for Innovation.
  • Present findings to internal leadership, external stakeholders, professional societies, and in peer-reviewed publications.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.

CORE COMPETENCIES:

  • Strong track record of publications in peer-reviewed journals and contributions to successful grant applications.
  • Knowledge of regulatory standards for clinical trials (e.g., FDA, NIH, IRB compliance).
  • Proficiency with advanced statistical software (R, SAS, STATA, Python, or similar platforms).
  • Ability to manage complex projects, supervise staff, and meet deadlines in high-pressure academic environments.
  • Exceptional written and oral communication skills, with ability to convey technical content to diverse audiences.
  • Strong interpersonal skills with ability to build trust, foster collaboration, and work across disciplines.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

Ph.D. in Biostatistics, Statistics, Epidemiology, or a closely related field. Minimum of 5-7 years of postdoctoral or equivalent professional experience in biostatistics within academic, clinical / medical, or research settings. Demonstrated experience serving as principal or lead statistician on funded research projects. Evidence of scholarly productivity, including peer-reviewed publications and successful grant contributions / acquisitions. Leadership experience in supervising analysts, students, or junior staff preferred. Faculty appointment eligibility in the College of Medicine preferred.
