The State Attorney for the Second Judicial Circuit serves as the chief prosecuting officer of all criminal trials in the circuit. The State Attorney appears in court with appointed Assistants and other staff to represent the interests of justice and the people. Our agency's mission statement is: “To serve the community through reducing crime and helping to mitigate the catastrophic impact that crime has on victims and offenders, their families, and society as a whole.” This includes proactively addressing the causes of criminal behavior, as well as seeking justice and employing creative strategies to lower recidivism after crimes have occurred.

 

 

The Work You Will Do:

 

The Second Judicial Circuit is seeking to hire a full time Support Victim Advocate in our Leon County office location for the purpose of answering all incoming calls to the Victim/Witness Assistance Program and providing crisis intervention, community referrals, case updates and explanation of the stages of the criminal and juvenile justice system. An employee in this position provides direct support services to primary and secondary victims of violent crime through each stage of the criminal and juvenile justice system. Additional direct service duties include backing up staff during daily First Appearance proceedings by running court docket to identify and make initial contact with crime victims on the phone and in writing then updating our case management system (STAC) with every victim contact. Other duties include providing contact information to other law enforcement agencies upon request as well as compiling data and monthly statistics for required monthly grant reports. This position will work with victims of crime needing assistance in Leon County from the time of arrest through the time of sentencing.

Specific Duties and Responsibilities:

 

An employee in this position is responsible for performing direct support services to victims as needed in cases prosecuted by the Office of the State Attorney. Duties include the following:

 

  • Greeting and assessing walk-in in victims to determine what services are needed.
  • Answering incoming calls to the Victim/Witness Assistance Program
  • Provide crisis intervention and emotional support for victims and families
  • Provide ongoing case management and case updates
  • Educate victims about the stages of the court process and what they can expect
  • Provide community referrals to help meet victims’ ongoing needs
  • Serve the community with competence, compassion and respect

Minimum Qualifications:

 

  • A high school diploma or equivalency and experience in the area of criminal justice, social science, crisis intervention, public contact or customer service; A bachelor’s degree in social work, criminology or related field may substitute for experience.
